Portia Gardner-Smith is an Occupational Therapist, Certified Hand Therapist, and Ergonomic Analyst for Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Ms. Gardner-Smith has twenty-nine years of experience as an OT in a variety of settings that include inpatient rehab, acute care, and outpatient hand therapy. Portia obtained her certification in hand therapy in 1993. She has been with Shands Healthcare since 1995, and with the University of Florida Movement Disorder Center since 2003. Since joining the MDC, she has contributed to interdisciplinary publications by authoring chapters on the role of OT with the Parkinson patient, as well as OT’s role with patients with dystonia diagnoses. Portia participates in the MDC’s monthly Education Day Program for patients with PD, and the quarterly Educational Day Program for patients with dystonia. In 2008, Portia completed the Allied Team Training for Parkinson, a National Parkinson Foundation Interdisciplinary Specialty Training.
